satyr

satyr
The translation in NJB at Lev. 17:7 for ‘goat-demons’ (NRSV), ‘demons’ (REB), ‘devils’ (AV); the same Hebrew noun is used in Isa. 13:21 in connection with the imminent downfall of Babylon. ‘Goat-demons’ (NRSV) are also part of the Lord's day of vengeance (Isa. 34:14).
In Greek mythology satyrs were nature deities, and thought to have bristly hair, pointed ears, horns projecting from the forehead, and the tail of a goat. So the translation of the Hebrew sa'ir as satyr has a certain appropriateness.
